Changing power steering fluid.?

In the average car, how do you change it out, and is there any benefit to sucking it out of the reservoir, and filling it with fresh?Changing power steering fluid.?
disconnect hose from rack and pinion or bottom of steering gear box. bad fluid will reduce performance of steering and lead to bad oil seals which will cause leaks.Changing power steering fluid.?
sucking it out of resivor helps but flushing and changing is better remove return hose from pump put end into drain pan start car and keep pour ing fluid till it turns clean put hose back on and top off fluid levelChanging power steering fluid.?
Never heard of anyone wanting to change it. Not a terrible idea although usually not necessary. If you want to use a turkey baster or similar device to suck out what is in the reservoir and put in fresh, go ahead. ENGINE OFF! Make sure to bring it to full level before starting the engine. After running for a couple minutes and turning the wheel back and forth a few times shut it off and recheck the level. If you want to change all the fluid it would be necessary to dismantle parts of the system. This is NOT a good idea. If you are not very experienced, this will invite a leak situation. The fluid always circulates in the system and most contamination and old fluid can be changed at the reservoir. If you want to be double sure just do it again in a week and you'll be flushed out pretty good. Always use the proper fluid of course. DO NOT put any other substance like a antileak additive or other cleaners in the reservoir. The proper fluid has detergents and other additives in it to make the system work properly. If it is a ford product, they sometimes get air in the system when the fluid is low. This can make the wheel shudder slightly in tight turns for up to a full day. It will bleed itself out under normal use, just make sure it is full. Good luck. Eddy

P.S. The shudder may be accompanied by a whining noise. This is normal and will also subside after a while.
