I went to get my oil changed and they said that I also needed to refill my power steering.. they showed me the power steering dip stick and it was clear that I did.. the thing is, I recently went into an auto supply shop and say power steering fluid for only a few dollars. Did I get ripped off...?I think I just got ripped off... how much should it cost to refill/replace power steering fluid in a 96 volvo?
I'm a service adviser at a dealership and I have a chemistry degree believe it or not. If they did a power flush w/an adittive (probably), you should have paid anywhere from 120.00 to 140.00. The additive is to stabalize the fluid so copper ions are not eating up the seals and other polymer/plastic parts. The Steering rack and pump are a large system and need more fluid and a special machine for flushing that the rest of these jokers don't understand. It really extends the life of the rack and pinion which can be really expensive to replace.

It's especially important when a repair has been made because an otherwise closed system has been compromised.

How much did they charge you to fill the PS fluid? If they charged you more than a couple of dollars for the labor, plus a reasonable cost for the fluid, they took advantage of you.

you don't say how much you paid to have them do it, but it does only cost a couple of bucks to buy a can of it. Anybody can pour it into the reservoir to the line that says 'full', and unless you've got a leak somewhere, it's not something that you have to do all the time, just check the level once in a while.I think I just got ripped off... how much should it cost to refill/replace power steering fluid in a 96 volvo?

if they flushed it then you paid a lot . next time use a turkey baster to get the old fluid out and refill it
