How to take care of car?

i notice alot of people just change their oil and water for the car....but what about braking fluid and power steering fluid etc.??How to take care of car?
Do all the basics and the car will last. How to take care of car?
All you need to do for power steering is to periodically check to make sure none has leaked out. You should flush the brake lines and bleed them about ever couple of years to prevent accumulation of condensation, which can corrode brake cylinders and cause them to leak. By the time your front brakes need replacing, you'll need to do this. Front brakes usually wear out before the rear ones.

Your owners manual should have recommended service intervals for these maintenance items. How to take care of car?
get a list of the manufacturer scheduled maintenance at mileage intervals. it will include services such as tune ups, change fuel filter, air filter, flush the transmission fluid and change the transmission filter, flush the power steering fluid, flush the coolant, check the differential fluid if it has one, and just take care of anything that needs it.How to take care of car?
ALWAYS follow the factory standards on maintenence like fluid changes and part changes. Like for instance when a part(s) start failing change them out immediately, not weeks or months or years later because they will start affecting other parts and performance. Keep it washed and wax it about once a year and you should be good to go.How to take care of car?
brake fluid should be flushed about 20 000 km i think dont quote me on it.or your next brake job. power steering should be done every 25 000-35 000 km. look in your maunal and it will tell you the intervaltsHow to take care of car?
If you have a manual follow it and if you don't, buy one or I'll be seeing you.

How to tell if clutch is still good?

I ask this question b/c I went to get an oil change at dealer and they offer to top off any fluids. Before I took my car in I checked my fluids to see where the level was, 1) to see if they needed topping off, and 2)to see if would really do it. anyway my fluids were ok except my power steering fluid was really dark {not sure if that is correct color}. My brake/clutch fluid was dark also, and I know for sure it should be clear. Also it was almost at the min mark. Anyway stupid me I didn't check at dealership if they did it or not. But when I got home I did and nothing was topped off. Again Coolant, washer fluid, power steering, and brak/clutch fluid were ok. Even if they didn't top off wouldn't they mention that my brake/clutch fluid was dark and not clear which could suggest a problem? What about my power steering{if ATF fluid is used then shouldn't it be red not dark brown/black. What does this mean for my clutch and power steering fluid.

By the way my car is 2000 ford focus LX with IB5 Manual transmission. 117383 miles on clock. ThanksHow to tell if clutch is still good?
Fist off if your brake fluid is low and not leaking you might need new pad/shoes,your brake fluid go's down as your brake pads/shoes wear out.You don't top off brake fluid, just replace pads or shoe's.If you want to change the fluid, then you draw the old fluid out the top and fill it with fresh fluid and bleed the lines till the fluid runs clear. The same applies to your clutch fluid.

If you want to test your clutch,go up a steep hill and when you shift into 2ed or 3rd gear give it a little extra gas to see if you can make it slip.

When I see very low cluch fluid and there is no leaks then I replace the clutch, pressure plate and through out bearing.

As far as the brake/clutch fluid being dark...that does'nt alarm me.

How many miles can a car last? 100,000, 200,000?

Is it true that a car's transmission oil does not have to be change?

When is the correct moment to change the distribution chain?

Which liquids in the car( for example; the motor engine, the coolant in the radiator, the break fluid, power steering, should be flush? and how often? How many miles can a car last? 100,000, 200,000?
Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule and use premium oil and filters. A man did that with a SAAB 900 and it went over 1,000,000 (yes that's a million) miles. How many miles can a car last? 100,000, 200,000?
all fluids needs to be changed...have it checked every 3 monthsHow many miles can a car last? 100,000, 200,000?
you should change transmission fluids according to the manufactoring specs,How many miles can a car last? 100,000, 200,000?
If you buy the car New on a dealer you should give proper and scheduled maintenance and it will last YEARS oil change every 4 months or according to mileage, or u can use a sintetic oil and filter and do it every single year, tranny the same, coolant every end of the year :flush and renew, but brakes and power steering not need to replace. anyway you have to view from this point, : a car did have a productive live of about 4 to 6 years after that you will have to replace every single part of it to keep it running troublefree. ex. when the transmision clutches gone they need to replace the whole kit, that is consider %26quot;major mechanics%26quot; on new cars you will check coolant levels and try to put more water than coolant because coolant %26quot;eat%26quot; aluminum blocks after years and when it happens u have to replace the whole engine, so sadly i can tell u that cars are designed not to last anymore, but to be replaced after certain numbers of years. How many miles can a car last? 100,000, 200,000?
I have 404,000 plus miles on my 1988 S-10 Blazer

transmission was changed once

oil every 7,000 or 10,000

coolant changed twice ( when I replaced the thermostat)

break and power steering ...never changed

Still whining power steering...?

Sor for the new post for those that answered...didn't know how to update without closing the thread. Thanks all for your inputs and answers, just wanted to leave an update.

I, again, checked the fluid level and bled it, checked for leaks and found nothing wrong. I also checked the belt for any wear/cracks/ or if it was tight enough/too tight. Everything seems fine.

I remeber though, about a day or so before it started whining, we heard clicking noises when we went up steep hills...I thought that might just be bad gas and was pinging. But now, even at idle, the pump sounds like it is knocking/clicking with a slight whine (almost like a blown engine----root blower). I'd hate to change belts only to find out it's not the problem...especially since it is a pain in the 3.0L engines. Yet I'd also hate to take it to a mechanic to have them tell me something I already might have guessed and pay them for it :(Still whining power steering...?
your power steering pump is going out.Still whining power steering...?
See your first answer. I'd agree with him! Your pump may be shot!Still whining power steering...?
the other answers are right! you are hearing the bearings in the pump wearing out. nothing to do now except replace the pump and also make sure that your belt isn,t too tight, that can knock out the bearings very quickly.Still whining power steering...?
Of course it is very hard to diagnose a car without seeing it and listening to it, but I do have this point to offer. You mention that the whining increased when going up hill, but unless you were turning while going up hill the act of climbing a hill would add no additional strain to a power steering pump.

What is the cost of all these parts?

I hvae 2003 Mazada Protege, few days back it got stopped on a freeway, when i tow it to the dealer, he said i need to change the following parts.can some one tell me how much these costs?he is billing around 3k.

drive belt

timing belt

water pumps

radiator

hoses

front brakes

power steering fluid

batteryWhat is the cost of all these parts?
Drive belt $9.00 - $19.00

Timing Belt $89.99 - $129.99

Water Pump $46.00 - $84.00

Radiator $199.99

Hoses $ 9.89 - $15.49 each

Brakes

Front $23.99 - $34.99

Rear $25.99

powers steering fluid $2.99

Based on the Autozone prices listed above, the total cost of parts on the high side is $ 527.00 . Therefore you are being charged about $ 2,473.00 labor.

Personally I would get a few more quotes. What is the cost of all these parts?
whoa. I'm not sure how much all that costs. but you might want to get a second opinion if you can. Honestly the parts total might cost like $1,000 and the $2,000 would be labor. They charge A LOT for labor. Some of that stuff you could have changed yourself with a few directions from the internet. i.e. the battery you could have done easily, same with the brakes and the power steering fluid. What is the cost of all these parts?
thats a lot of thing to be change plus its a 2003 i bet you dont need have if those things they just want to rip you off it there job. plus if you really want to change all that u will half of that or lest if you do it your self or have a friend do it for youWhat is the cost of all these parts?
drive belt - do your self

timing belt - not if it is an 03,as there are 13 year old Taurus' on there original belt

water pumps - dealer is bs-ing you

radiator - lie from dealer

hoses - another lie

front brakes - do your self

power steering fluid - BIG @$$ lie

  • Rough cost of replacing power steering pump STS 99?

Does anyone know how much it costs to replace a power steering pump in my 99 or 98 Cadillac STS. cant remember which year. Im pretty positive the pumps out, because the wheel is very difficult to steer with. I noticed today that it started making the low fluid whining sound when turning. Really I want to know rough labor costs. A mechanic told me roughly 1,000. I find that to be rediculous because the parts add up to about 100. I just dont know how much work goes into changing it on a Cadillac. anyone with experience please help. Im not sure if it would require an engine lift or anything like that. That would be awesome if I could just do it in my garage with regular tools, but I doubt it.

thanks a lot in advanced everyone,

JoshRough cost of replacing power steering pump STS 99?
Have you tried looking under the car for leaks. Sometimes it is a simple thing like to tighten a clamp on a hose from the pump to the rack %26amp; pinion. What I would do is fill the pump with oil jack up the front of the car start the motor turn your steering wheel left to right lock to lock 4 or 5 times then have a look under the car to see if you can see the oil leak there has to be a leak somewhere. Have a go you have nothing to loose.Rough cost of replacing power steering pump STS 99?
It sounds more like the steering rack is the problem. That will cost around $1000 dollars and up.

How long can a squeaking power steering pump be left alone?

So yesterday I start pulling out of my driveway in my '89 LeSabre (Vin C 3800 motor, pump has 220k miles) when I noticed my power steering feeling wonky and the pump making a terrible noise. I check the fluid and it was foamy, yellow, and super low. I must have a small leak and the empty space must have gotten filled with condensation (was raining all day) and then mixed with the remaining fluid. I sucked out the old fluid and poured in some fresh fluid and off to school I went.

So... I check it again today and its super low... again.... at least its not foaming this time. However, the pump has developed a squeak so its time for a new one. I'm actually going to salvage the pump and lines off an '89 Bonnie parts car but I can't get at for a couple days.

    So my questions:

    1. Can I drive my car with the bad pump for a couple hundred miles and be ok? I commute a pretty good distance to school but I should be able to swap out the pump in about a week. I'll keep the fluid topped off in the mean time and the squeaking isn't terrible right now.

    2. How exactly is the pumped changed out? 2x 13mm bolts to the motor and then a couple 10mm fittings to the rack, then pull the lines and pump out as an assembly?

Thanks for any input folks :)How long can a squeaking power steering pump be left alone?
Yes you can still drive the car with a squeaking power steering pump. Can't really tell you how long the pump will last but even if it goes out completely it is still drivable just really hard to turn. If you want to get a little more time out of the pump fill it up with transmission fluid. It is thicker than steering fluid so it will not leak as fast and will still work Just fine. and to change the pump as long as the pulleys are the same you just unhook the lines unbolt the pump and replace. If the pulley is different you will need to get them both pressed off and the new one pressed on to the pump. most parts stores should have the tool for this to rent. How long can a squeaking power steering pump be left alone?
The one thing you have neglected to mention is %26quot;where the leak is%26quot;...THAT is what needs to be repaired before you even consider how long you can drive with a squeaky pump. Allowing the pump to run low everyday is just asking for a more catastrophic failure that would likely cost more money...How long can a squeaking power steering pump be left alone?
If you keep it topped off you will be ok. I had one go dry and finally after 3000 miles it went out. I think it lasted so long is because a small bit stayed in the pump to lubricate it.

good luck on 2 question. It really shouldn't be too difficult. It might be easier to remove the lines 1st. If you have access to tubing wrenches will help the chance of rounding off corners of the fittingsHow long can a squeaking power steering pump be left alone?
power steering is only to make slow speed turning easier and is not a major requirement but you could need a new rack and pinion/steering box depending on type of steering and where the leak is....the bad noise is proberbly because of the pump working on low fluid

Do auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?

I just brought my car in for an oil change and lube service. The place I go to is pretty good about service and repairs in that I can drop my car off in the day, and pick it up in the early evening for service other than oil changes.

    However, I noticed that several times (today included), the mechanic would call and say something like %26quot;We did the oil change, but noticed the other fluids could use a change -- coolant, transmission, power steering.%26quot;

When they say that, are they being good mechanics by watching out to keep the cars they serve in tip-top shape or are they just giving a soft sell to make extra services?

Would love to hear from other customers and if you work(ed) as a mechanic and have any inside knowledge. Thanks.Do auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
No they don't get commission however most get a flat rate based on the type of service. It doesn't matter how long they spend working on it. They may be jerking your chain however check your owner's manual and see how often it recommends those maintenance items performed. If it says to change your brake fluid every 50k miles, and your shop is telling you to do it at 30, you need to find a new shop. Unless they can show and explain to you why you need it sooner than the manufacturer recommends.Do auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
They usually charge by the hour for example here in Australia you are looking at about $40.00 an hour then you pay for the parts etc, etcDo auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
it all depends on your mechanic and his character. my husband is a mechanic, runs his own shop, and tops off fluids for free for deserving, loyal customers. otherwise, he calls them, gives them the choice and follows customer's instructions. it pays to be on top of things with your own vehicle...keep a maintenance record of when you last got your fluids checked.Do auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
The mechanic does not make a commission off of how many repairs they perform. Typically they make a flat rate per hour. At automotive shops they always mention if they notice something that could be done to improve the vehicles performance. They are doing their jobs and being good mechanics by keeping an eye out for potential problems but of course the shop would like your repeat business. They do not want to not tell you about a potential problem or recommended service and have you return 2 weeks later with a transmission problem that could have been prevented by a transmission flush. They are not out to gouge you for services. They aren't trying to sell you anything that you don't need.Do auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
upsell is where the business is. oil changes doesnt involve much labor dollars. Definetely we are after your money but rather honestly, by pointing out what other services you need.Do auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
my dad fixes boats and he charges by the job. overhaul would be like $500-$1200 depending on engine, tune ups are like $120 and when he fixes a boat he doesn't really try to rip people off. he has to make sure everything is working the way it should so that if a problem were to occur he won't get blamed. but for somethings he must charge extra like cleaning the carbs. hope this helps.Do auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
This is a classic symbiotic circumstance.

YES -- he is calling for the UPSELL. The more he can do for you, the more they (he) gets paid.

Some shops actually pay a flat-rate for these repairs. Others provide a bonus for sales over the original service.

Still others pay a %26quot;profit sharing%26quot; dividend at the end of the month for net profits over base services less expenses.

The other side of this coin is that they LIVE under your hood and car, and they are aware (or SHOULD be) of things about your car that you may or may not be. They are also usually better able to judge the level of need for service.

It is for this reason that you really ought to keep track of the service and repair history of your car, and don't be shy about saying %26quot;No%26quot; if you think (NOT %26quot;feel%26quot;) you are being mistreated.

And, it isn't particularly inappropriate to ask how the techs are compensated. But ask AFTER the bill has been paid, or BEFORE authorizing any services or repair. This will give you a better idea of where the tech is based, and it will be clear to the tech that you are paying attention to him, and he will less likely %26quot;Push%26quot; an upsale for mere greed.

Good LuckDo auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
Some do and some do not. Or to be more precise. Some only get paid by the amount of work that they do. While others get paid by the hour. Still others get paid by the job that they do.

Say if the going rate is 45.00 per hour for labor, then they would get a percentage of that rate.

But, if you go in for one thing and they say that you need extras done, then yes, they could get a bonus for getting you to 'buy' more. But, if you say no. Then they are to go with your original service. I've gone to two places in the past, where they tried to sell me more than what I was there for.

One place, I went to get a catalytic convertor replaced. They originally gave me a price for a universal type. So, I made the appointment to get this done. Took my vehicle in and they said that it would take 2 hours to do and so I left. But, when I got back, they had already removed my old unit and dropped my car from their lift and parked it in their hold lot. They said that I needed a special unit and that they had to order it and that since they removed my old unit, legally i couldn't drive my car until it was replaced. They told me that it would take a week to get one and they were going to charge me 100.00 per day to store my car on their lot. Well, I told them that I would pay for their time that day and told them to release my car so that I could take it somewhere else to be fixed that day. They refused and told me that I didn't have any choice. Well, what did I do. I made a phone call and a police officer showed up about 10 minutes later. I explained to him what was going on and asked him to arrest all of the people that worked there for extortion and theft. He asked them if they had a universal in stock and they said yes, after he told them that I was going to press charges. It took them 20 minutes to put my car back onto their lift and install that universal. The shop in question was $@%26amp;$. There, five symbols, you figure it out. Starts with an M. And this was in Indiana where they don't have smog laws.Do auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
as ex sales man at firestone i can tell you and theother guys did its jus a upsell technique this time of year the brake fluid and coolant important as for belt check, goto firestone web site or other auto web and learn about some schedule maintenance, also ask them to show you your fluids ask to go out to your car to show you, check your tires for nails tooDo auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
I have worked at several shops. I refuse to work at flat rate. I feel this is nothing more than a money grab. For several years, I've worked overtime for nothing, giving up my Saturdays, put up with all kinds of ******** from car owners and shop owners alike. Happy customers come back, ones that have been told they need all kinds of unnecessary work don't.Do auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
Mechanic pay is sort of like a commisson. The way flat rate works is that the mechanic gets paid by what he does. Lets say that the mechanic works for $40 an hour. Then he gets a car that needs a new alternator. He then goes to the flat-rate book or some reference that tells him how long this job %26quot;should%26quot; tqake. No matter how long the job takes him he gets paid for the time stated. So if it takes him a half hour but the book said it should take an hour then he still gets $40, however if it takes him 2 hours then he still gets $40. Dending on the job and shop he may get a half hour pay for diagnostics.

One more thing is that a mechanic should never do anything to your car that you do not agree to prior to it being done, if they do the work and you didnt approve it then they cannot charge for it. However they will suggest extras when work is slow because more work means more pay.Do auto mechanics get paid by commission on how many auto services they perform?
I see you got an idea of how most mechanics are paid...

But some fluids are recommended by the factory to be changed at certain times (such as the transmission and coolant) while others aren't but can help in the life of the car possibly (power steering)

Some of it is upsell like the power steering, the others like the coolant and transmission, are required maintaince.. best thing is to go by the manufacturers service schedule and you won't have any problems

I was driving my 1991 Nissan Stanza, and suddenly the accelerator went limp...?

It had no give, and I couldn't accelerate unless I press the pedal hard to the floorboard. It's a lot slower accelerating now, and none of the mechanics I've talked to know whats wrong. The oil, and power steering fluid were just changed (I actually just bought this car a couple days ago, it was checked out before I bought it and was fine), It has a new battery, and I was told the fuel filter and air filter are fine.

If anyone can point me in the right direction about what's wrong, and let me know how much it'll cost to fix it, please let me know. I got this car because it checked out okay by my mechanic and I could afford it. Buying a different car is not an option.I was driving my 1991 Nissan Stanza, and suddenly the accelerator went limp...?
sounds like your accelerator linkage is broken or slipped just pop the hood and look on the throttle body at where the throttle cable comes in and see if it is broke or slipped also turn the throttle manually and make sure the butterfly flap inside the intake is opening with the throttle you will have to take the big black hose off to the air filter to see it but if you move the throttle back and forth and the butterfly isnt opening then it could be broken but try looking there first and you can pretty much go from thereI was driving my 1991 Nissan Stanza, and suddenly the accelerator went limp...?
Sounds like Don is on the right track . sep for 1 thing the linkage is there but the carp is not. its fuel injected . but like he said I bet the cable is stretched broke inside the line. good luck . Way to go DonI was driving my 1991 Nissan Stanza, and suddenly the accelerator went limp...?
Try Don's suggestions as it sounds like he's heading in the right direction. I'll add a couple more thoughts though...

    a) Your TPS (throttle position sensor) might be bad. Grab a digital ohm meter and test it carefully. Youtube has videos on how to do this.

    b) Run a test on the fuel pressure and make sure it is up to specs.

    c) Make sure your airflow isn't being blocked or restricted.

If you're getting good fuel pressure, good airflow, your throttle linkage and the TPS is working, it shouldn't be acting like this.

How badly did I get ripped off?

I left my car in my garage for 5 years without using it. I took it to the mechanic today to get it running again. He charged me $700 for cleaning out the gas tank, replacing the feul pump (with a generic pump, not the name brand pump), cleaning out the fuel lines, and replacing the battery. Also, I will be going tomorrow to another mechanic and spending $300 to replace all the fluids in the car (a 30k which includes coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, oil and the filters). Should I get the fluids changed for this price? The car (Nissan Quest mini van) was in perfect condition when I parked it.How badly did I get ripped off?
there wasn't any reason to replace the fuel pump. If you had put a gasoline additive in to keep the gas at a stable set, everything would've been fine.

Sounds like the guy did good work, but I would question the fuel pump, unless it was very gummed up, some Seafoam or TEchron would've fixed that though.

Next time, sell the car, it's not worth storing it for 5 years, a lot of things can go wrong due to it not being driven... engine oil seals, transmission seals, rust where there shouldn't be..How badly did I get ripped off?
Well, you ripped yourself off by leaving the car for that period.

Those charges seem about right for the amount of work involved.

At least once it's all done it will be better than new!

What mileage was on the car?How badly did I get ripped off?
Shouldn't have paid anything, just fill it up with fresh gas. Theres even an additive you can put in the tank to store it for that long. So I'd say pretty bad. At least it wasn't in the thousands.

When i first bought my car it was descent, it sat up high (suspension i think) and it drove really good. Now my car sits really low and it makes a squeaking noise when i turn my steering wheel (oh and its getting tougher to turn my wheel also and i don't need power steering fluid bc i checked) what i want to know is, how can i make my car sit high like it was before without and dramatic changes and why is my car squeaking with each turn?Need to know whats wrong with my Honda civic?

we changed the hose for the power steering that was leaking. Does it need to be bled? Should the hose be filled with fluid before reattachment? How do you bleed it? ThanksI have an Oliver 1550 tractor that is having steering problems?
Just turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times; that's it. Then check the fluid level and add if needed.

    Condition of ATF fluid?

I just changed ATF in our 1995 BMW 525 at 113,000 miles. I wonder if there is some way to measure the vital characteristics of ATF. Assign some sort of grade to it so to speak. I just get curious about this and power steering fluid too. I am thinking of how much of its life is spent.Condition of ATF fluid?
If you did just a drain and fill, then you didn't do too much. If you had a transmission flush done at a shop, I would say 95-97 percent of the fluid was changed, if you just did a drain and fill yourself, figure you changed about 30 percent of it.Condition of ATF fluid?
Atf and clear p/s fluid are a 10w oil of the same, the difference is that atf uses a detergent to extend the life and viscosity.Condition of ATF fluid?
Tranny fluid is good for a looong time, maybe 50K. If you check it and it looks brown, it's time for a change. I don't know of any test that can be done, but it's a great thought.Condition of ATF fluid?
i can't tell anything that you can use to test it at home short of smelling it. if you smell it and it smells burnt its burnt and should be discarded. one problem with ATF is that it does not hold a lot of heat energy so even though its good to high temp it does often get too hot under harsh use and oxidize. i wonder now too if there are other ways of testing it.

  • 88 Buick LeSabre Custom - transmission fluid needed can't find tank where to add some?

Hi again and we thank the two of 1st answerers that we see so far. I can't figure out how to reply to each of you to thank or added questions. I had no choice but to create a 2nd question. (I tried to change my profile but can't find this option).

I quickly went outside to reck (it'll be dark soon) and best I can figure the 1 unmarked tank is full where it should be but it's right next to the pulley related to power steering.

I'm now interpreting this unmarked tank to be power steering fluid?

I crawled onto the engine to track this unmarked tank and where the hose leads to, it seems to head in direction of transmission dip stick but then I can't see it anymore. So I don't know if it does lead to trans dipstick.

I tried to track from trans dipstick but it is very long and gets to point I can't see the bottom so I can't figure where the transmission fluid comes from that leads to the dipstick!

I'm giving my email address with extra spaces and wording because I don't think that Yahoo will allow it. carolehventura at hotmail dot com or carolehventura at yahoo dot com. I get error msgs in options that Yahoo is taking a break so no edits are working.

Lastly, I still can't find where the transmission fluid supply goes in. I'm trying to avoid a burned transmission (know this will cost alot to fix). I think the problem is low level.

I'm disabled and have no choice but to drive N into work tonight and pick him up. Please help one more time???? you can't imagine how we appreciate your help!

88 Buick LeSabre Custom - transmission fluid needed can%26039;t find tank where to add some?
    Hi

WARNING: First of all if before you add Fluid. The transmission needs to be cooled to room TEMP_ not over 90 degrees, VERY IMPORTANT, so if you have been driving very long , you need to turn off the car for about a 1/2 hour.

    1. Then start the car, set the emergency brake, put the car in Neutral and then back to P-Park.

    2. Then pull the dip stick out ( it's yellow , you find it back by the fire wall 1/2 inch x 2 inch) pull it out and wipe it clean with a clean lint free clouth or paper towel. with the car running still in P-Park.

3.Now if the fuild is anywhere with in the hatch marked

{XXX IN THIS AREA XXX} area dont add any fluid. The fuid level is OK.

3a. If the fluid is below the hatch {XXXXX} mark AREA,

    Then ADD FLUID WARNING%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

(You will find the correct Transmission fluid TYPE engraved right on the dip stick)

3a 1. Add only enough fuild to bring the level back up into the hatch mark area.

4.The fluid is added through the same hole that you pulled out the Transmission DIP-STICK.

    5. You will need a funel in order to add the fuild. Most auto part store will have an exteneded or very long funel (refered to as a Transmission funel).

    6. You should only add about a 1/4 of a quart of fluid at a time checking to see if the fluid level is back with-in the hatch marked area(XXXXX) on the dip stick. ( CHECK WITH ENGINE RUNNING CAR IN PARK WITH EMERGENCY BRAKE ON)

    7. DO NOT OVER FILL IT WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION FROM TO HIGH OF PRESSURE. Over filling may cause leaks if the seals are old with car over 100,000 mile

Good Luck, And I hope this answered all of your question.88 Buick LeSabre Custom - transmission fluid needed can%26039;t find tank where to add some?
just pull the dip stick out of the opening and pour the transmission fluid in where the dip stick goes. It is kind of tricky to do without a funnel that fits in the opening. Not too much at a time. And be sure to check the level with the engin running. 88 Buick LeSabre Custom - transmission fluid needed can%26039;t find tank where to add some?
it,s in the same place as my 88 oldsmobile is. when you raise the hood the dip stick is located right behind the engine, that,s where you fill it at , but watch you don,t fill it too much or you will blow a seal.88 Buick LeSabre Custom - transmission fluid needed can%26039;t find tank where to add some?
On my truck, everything is marked, and laid out fairly easy, but I have a Ford, so its a different company. I would go to Auto Zone and get a book on the car. Good Luck.

How can I prepare my car for the smog check?

Are there any little cheap and easy things I can do to my car to increase its odds of passing its smog check? I think it would be in my best interest to change the oil, adjust the tire pressure and re time the ignition. Is there anything else you can think of?

Also it has a power steering fluid leak, should I repair this or replace the high pressure hose before going for the smog check? How can I prepare my car for the smog check?
do the oil change and tune it up if it hasn't been done in a while. also change the fuel filter if it hasn't been done and don't forget the air filter. replace that hose also not for the test but to be safe. the main thing is if the service engine is on they wont let you even test so get that fixed. if it is on some parts stores will scan it and tell you what the problem is, and you can fix it and then get it tested. other than that your good to go

How do I replace the power steering main pressure hose in a 1990 Honda Accord?

What tools will I need to replace the main powersteering pressure hose and what are the steps to replace it? I am not a mechanic but I am familiar with changing oil for my car, replacing radiator fan, replacing thermostat, replacing fuel filter, replacing air filter, etc. With my level of expertise, how much more difficult is it to replace the main pressure hose for the powersteering? Do I have to drain the fluid first? Should I wrap up the alternator to avoid spills into it? etc.How do I replace the power steering main pressure hose in a 1990 Honda Accord?
the only special tools you'll need is a 14mm flare nut wrench.

start by draining the fluid. You do this by removing the return hose from the power steering reservoir (the hose that does not go to the power steering pump) and place the end into a suitable container such as an old 2 litre soda bottle.

have someone hold the bottle out of the way from the engine drive belts fo that it is at or below the level of the power steering reservir. Remove the cap from the power steering reservoir.

Then start the engine and slowly turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and hold it there for the count of 5. Then slowly turn it fully to the other side and hold it. Do this three or four times and the fluid will have been pumped out of the system. Stop as soon as the fluid flow becomes slight or stops so that you don't damage the pump.

Then you can remove the pressure line from the back of the power steering pump. it has a special banjo fitting but no special tool is required to remove the nut. I think its probably a 10 mm but I'm not sure.

with the hose removed from the pump end, raise the front of the car up. you'll have to get under the car and locate the steering gear. It will be attached to the rear engine bulkhead and have four steel lines going into the control valve. The pressure line has a 14 mm nut. the return line has a 17mm nut. the other two lines are for the power steering cooler. If the cooler lines are the same as the pressure line you'll have to figure out which line is the pressure line by following the hose back from the pump.

use the flare nut wrench so that you don't damage the fitting. Once you break it loose you can usually remove the fitting by hand and then remove the hose. I recommend wearing safety glasses because there may be residual fluid that comes out and you don't want to get that in your eyes.

replace the hose by routing the hose between the pump and the steering gear, then threading in the fitting to the steering rack first then tightening the fitting with the flare nut wrench. then connect the steering hose to the pump end using the special bolt that you removed earlier.

With the hose in place, reconnect the return hose to the reservoir, fill the reservoir with fluid and bleed the air out of the system by starting the engine and following the same procedure you used to remove the fluid from the system at the start. top off the fluid level to the full mark, and check for leaks. If no leaks, then your done.

As long as you have the right tools and some patience you should be able to do this.

    hope that answers your questions

How are people that work in new car dealership auto shops paid? What are flag hours?

Do the Lube Techs have to pay for their own fluids such as oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, etc. at a dealership, and only get paid something like 3/10 of an hour for each oil change? If only one person comes in for an oil change, they only get paid for the 3/10 of hour for the entire day.How are people that work in new car dealership auto shops paid? What are flag hours?
lube techs are paid hourly, they are not experienced enough to be paid flat rate And no one makes out enough on flat rate pay just changing oil!

The dealership charges the customer for the fluids, the lube tech is only responsible for the labor. If he is smart and not flat rate he will drag his butt and not perform so quickly. How are people that work in new car dealership auto shops paid? What are flag hours?
They don't pay for their own oil, and they get paid hourly to change oil plus per change.

94 Mercedes E320 - How do you reset the dashboard lights?

Basically, in a month ago, in order to pass smog, I had to replace my gas cap. The gas cap that was on there was the original. I replaced it with a new one, however, once I did that, my check engine light came on. Unfortunately, I disposed of the old one once I got the new one. My check engine light has not subsided, and the weird thing, is my car runs flawlessly... I just had it serviced at 135,000 miles w/oil %26amp; filter change, power steering, differential fluids, etc.

My light remains on %26amp; I don't have the money to start allowing shops to pull codes, especially on an OB-1 computer. How do you reset the dashboard?

I figure if there is big problem, after the reset the light will come back on. Then, I will take it in.

Please though, how do you reset this?94 Mercedes E320 - How do you reset the dashboard lights?
Apparently the new gas cap is not airtight and allows the air to enter the tank (or vapors to escape to the atmosphere, depending on the pressure difference).

The light should reset itself after 10 %26quot;trips%26quot;. A %26quot;trip%26quot; is defined by a cold start, warming up, driving a mile or so and shutting down the engine. So one could say that if the conditions that triggered the malfunction lamp no longer exist, the light will extinguish itself after a week or so. If it doesn't then the condition that triggers the warning lamp is still present and needs to be rectified.94 Mercedes E320 - How do you reset the dashboard lights?
the diagnostic connector for OBD 1 is under the hood on the passenger side near the fire wall

remove the cap . there is a 16 pin socket box . on this box you will see a red LED light with a black button next to it ,

turn the ignition switch to the run position ,

press this button until the light comes on for 1 to 3 seconds and release , the light will begin to blink.count the blinks and this is your code ,

to clear...once the light stops blinking and remains on you have less than 2 seconds to press and hold the button again for 8 to 10 seconds once you do that the code should clear,if there is more than one code you will need to repeat this procedure for each additional code until all codes are clear

you may need to try this a few times to get it done cause the computer will not clear the codes if you do not press the button in the correct manner

long list and easy to say you do it everyday every week and every month

first one 3000 miles oil and filter rotate tires check tire monthly or more wil save life of tire and get better fuel mileage

power steering fluid really dont have to ever been change just toped off

coolant/anti-freeze top off change like every three yrs

break fluid top off never change

Transmission fluid check like oil change oil and filter but like at 60,000 120,000 miles

has for fuel buy at place you stop at most offen fil with best they have set mileage drive til you need more try next octane level set mileage used the one that gets the best miles which will vary with each place knowing a few brands and type to use but most cars will run fine on them all but using the one that gets yourcar the best mileage is the one you want to use

windshield wiper blades once a yr

freons have it check once a yr

wash when dirty wax every other time or about four times or so a year when ever you feel like it has for

    cleaning insides when ever

wheel alignment once a yr or if you see tires are wearing or it drives funny as for wheel rotation easy to remember to do it with oil change about every 3000 miles its not so much as when to but to do most people dont do it at all heres a couple sites that you can find how to's and when

How often should you maintain your car?
Read your cars manual. It will tell you how often to service and what to do when you service it.

You should check your tyres as often as you can and definately before long journeys. You should get a pump.

Differences in petrol(gas) are only the octane rating, use regular unless your car requires premium. (Read the manual)

Freon is a trade name, but I assume you mean air conditioning refrigerant, you don't need to do anything with this unless your air conditioning stops working.

You clean your car when it gets dirty... I wax mine every time I wash it.. and I wash it a lot. It is personal preferance.

Wheel alignment I'd have done every year, unless you notice a problem. Make sure you get a 4 wheel alignment if you drive a rear wheel drive car.How often should you maintain your car?
Every car make is a little different, look in your service manual it'll have all that info.

How much should I pay for a rack and pinion job on a 2000 Buick LeSabre?

I brought my car in today for a simple oil change. They told me that my power steering fluid is leaking and that the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. They quoted the job at $1354.12!!! Is that reasonable? (I'm in Chicago.) I've went there for several other repairs and trust them generally, but this just sounds way overpriced...

I'm waiting to for input and maybe a 2nd opinion, but they also told me it's not good to drive around with it. I was planning to go out of town this weekend- is it unsafe to take my car? Would it cause more damage and cost even more?!

Thanks for any input! How much should I pay for a rack and pinion job on a 2000 Buick LeSabre?
If it wasn't out of fluid, then the leak isn't that bad. Tell them to leave it alone.

The rack and pinion may not be bad. The car is not that old.

You need to find the leak. It could be the high pressure hose fitting. In the mean time, it is very drivable, just monitor the fluid level.

I have a mint condition 1993 ford probe gt but the check engine light comes on?

I am the second owner of my 1993 Ford probe GT right now it has about 52,184 miles original miles in fact. I almost had the car for 1 1/2 years I bought it from a retired Air Force guy with 43,243 original miles, he babied and garaged the car ever since he bought it new in 1994. I also babied ever since I got it, changed the oil every 3000 miles or three months, synthetic oil, in fact just had a recent oil and filter change, always warm it up even on an avarage California day. Never race it. Anyways I have a check engine light come on every day or every other day just ounce for only 30 to a minute and it goes away. I don't know what it is, I checked the oil level its at a perfect level. Also when ever I steer the steering wheel in a parking lot or while standing still, steer it left and right I hear liksquealingng squeaky rubbing noises every time I turn it to the left or

to the right all the way but not to much on normal turns without the cranking. So I am just concerned about those two problems, thesqueakyy steering and the mmysteriouscheck engine light in fact it began right after I got the oil and filter change done, but I check the oil level and it was good. I am guessing its like a loose vacuumhose or it needs a new oxygen sensor. But I don;t know what it is and I have no idea about the steering noise I had the power steering fluid changed a year ago, plus my car has not been used untill like begging of august cause I was in the military on deployment and I just got back. My dad did start it up every three days to keep the battery from dieing and he took it around the block ounce a while. So can somebody tell me what those two problems might be and how I should take care of them? I love my car I only want the best for her, so your honest answer will greatly be appreciated by me. Thank You hit me up when you get this.I have a mint condition 1993 ford probe gt but the check engine light comes on?
The squeak could be a slipping belt on your power steering pump. Simply check the tension and spray the belt with belt spray. I'd bet the check engine light is an oxygen sensor, I would ignore that light. It's harmlessI have a mint condition 1993 ford probe gt but the check engine light comes on?
as for the steering if its doing it when the wheel is turned all the way to one side then its not a problem every car I have ever driven has done that (why it makes that noise i don't know) and for the check engine light take it to like auto zone or checker (or what ever is in your area) and see if they can scan the codesI have a mint condition 1993 ford probe gt but the check engine light comes on?
Check the power steering fluid level and the tension on the belt. As for the the check light. A friends car does the same thing and was told it was the computer that would cost about a hundred bucks to repair. If it stays on for only 30 seconds, I wouldn't worry about it. If you do worry, take it to the dealer to get at the bottom of it. They will have the machine to hook it up to. A shade tree mechanic will run you round in circles.

  • Power steering cost and reasons for failure?

3 weeks ago my steering goes on my 2005 chevy silverado with 36k miles. I take it in to the shop they charge 380 after tax to fix the power steering pump. I asked them what could cause this to happen with such low miles they said either wear or defective unit. then 3 weeks later same thing happens. I take it back they say its the power steering gearbox now. that cost me 630 dollars after tax. I cant afford to get this steering fixed once a month. How do I know the gearbox was the source of all this crap. They missed the gearbox being shot the first time around how do i know its not something simple that is putting pressure on the gearbox and pump? SHould be no reason for failure at 36k miles. Fluid level has aways been checked. I have got to say comparing my business with other industries my Business blows any other business away as far as service and guarantees goes. I give the customer a price to fix a problem and if i dont i go back no charge. As far as paying the mechanic to change the power steering pump i think it was a half *** job. I went there to get the steering fixed not to have him replace a broken part there is a difference. He missed the gearbox the first time even after asking him what could cuase the pump to break.

so 1.did they charge a fair price? 1100 total for gearbox and pump.

    2. why wouldnt thye have seen relized the gearbox was shot the first time.

3 what could cuase all that crap to break in the first place and should they have known or checked in other areas. I would think they would seeing how unuasual the repair is.

Normally after i get my car fixed i am worry free. I walked at worried this crap is going to blow up on me lose my steering becuase they missed something lose control of my truck and kill someone becuase of there incompitencePower steering cost and reasons for failure?
with that low miles, shouldn't it be covered under the factory warranty? Its not going to blow up and you lose your steering, Do you have aftermarket wheels, such as 20 inch rims or bigger? they will cause the power steering and parts to wear prematurely and go out. 1100 sounds about right for both parts fixed with labor and parts.

Steering is malfunctioning after an oil change. Can I take legal action against the people who did it?

So I had my oil changed today at a small car service station half a mile from my house. When they were all done and they said I was good to go, I get to my car and the plastic plate that snaps over my oil tank was on the ground propped against my car. They forgot to put it back in. I had them snap it back in for me and then I left. Then washed my car at their convenient car wash.

I almost got all the way home (remember, I only live half a mile away from this place) and my power steering failed and I couldn檛 turn into my neighborhood. I pulled over to turn off my engine and turn it back on. It worked again. I drove back to the place and asked if they messed with my power steering and what could be wrong with it. Of course, they denied touching my power steering and they came up with the diagnosis that the water from the car wash could have sprayed too much water in the engine and that could cause the steering to malfunction. They said once the water dries up, it should go back to normal. They didn檛 even have a look at my car. I was a little upset that they would give me a diagnosis without even looking. I said okay?and left. The steering failed 4 more times after that.

I have only owned this car for one year and I have driven in pouring down rain with flash floods!! I know water has splashed on the underside of my engine?and I have NEVER ONCE had this problem. And, I have been through that same carwash before! A couple times!

I own an ?5 Saturn Ion with electrical power steering, no fluid involved. Has this situation happened to anyone else? Can water cause the power steering to malfunction? Or was that all a load of bull? If the problem persist, can I take legal action? Can I get the repair done somewhere else and then make them pay the bill? How do I go about doing that?

I personally think that they did something careless. I could have gone on the expressway and gotten seriously injured!! I'm scared to drive my car now.

Any input would be appreciated.Steering is malfunctioning after an oil change. Can I take legal action against the people who did it?
i suggest you have your car diagnosed by a qualified mechanic, if he tells you they caused the problem, have him put it on a %26quot;repair estimate%26quot; Then confront the people that changed the oil, if they still deny it have the car fixed, then file a complaint with your local BBB and proceed with small claims at your local court house. Good luck.Steering is malfunctioning after an oil change. Can I take legal action against the people who did it?
diagnosis without even looking chnging the cars oil wouldnt have anything to do with power steering and neither would a car wash can you take action wel you would have to prove they done something to cause it to fail which unlikely if you dont trust your shop go else where and have it check but even then wil be hard to say if they done something or not much less prove itSteering is malfunctioning after an oil change. Can I take legal action against the people who did it?
As long as you can prove they caused the problem, there is no reason why you shouldn't try to be compensated for the repair. But it's going to be pretty difficult to show proof though. No judge is just going to hear this story and take your word for it so hopefully you have comething more concrete.Steering is malfunctioning after an oil change. Can I take legal action against the people who did it?
Sounds fishy. Even if they didn't touch it, the fact is you came to them with a problem and they did nothing about it. that there should have some significance. I mean your steering is kind of an important thing so you could get them on endangerment for failing to take care of a problem.Steering is malfunctioning after an oil change. Can I take legal action against the people who did it?
If you just had your oil changed, it is very unlikely that they did anything to the power steering. No reason to. Probably a coincidence. Actually, this is why I quit being a mechanic 35 years ago. I would replace a water pump and next day, maybe the heater blower wouldn't work and the owner would swear I did something because it worked fine before.

How do I bleed my power steering pump on my 98 Ford Taurus?

I own a 98 Ford Taurus (V6 3.0 single cam) I had my power steering pump changed recently by my gf's father, because the old one was leaking. The car is working but the steering seems to have a little bit more resistance than it should (very mild) and also has a very slight whine that kicks in once in a while. I know that is the indication of a leak but it only happens once in a while. I also checked the fluid and it is brownish and murky, not the way the fluid looked when I added it. I talk to my gf's dad and he said that the power steering pump needs to be bled, but doesn't know how to do it. He said it may just need to be used a while more to get the air pushed out of it. He also said to start the car and crank the wheel back and forth for a bit once in a while. he said that will help prime it. Should I do this? Is the fluid normal? Should the power steering pump be bled? if so, how do I do it? If anyone can answer anything, it would be greatly appreciated. thank you.How do I bleed my power steering pump on my 98 Ford Taurus?
The air will work ts way out. Just keep a check on your fluid Laval and it will be fine. How do I bleed my power steering pump on my 98 Ford Taurus?
    Yep, No bleeding is necessary.

When you wake up tomorrow it will be fine.

All that pumping has churned the fluid into fine micro bubbles.

It will take a while till they dissipate.

If you had the front wheels off the ground prior,

    it would of worked quicker.

CheersHow do I bleed my power steering pump on my 98 Ford Taurus?
Disconnect the hose to the fittings on the axle to let gravity push out the air. Then put the hose back and refill the power steering pump. How do I bleed my power steering pump on my 98 Ford Taurus?
There is no bleeding. The cap has a breather hole that will allow any trapped air in the system to escape as the pump is working.

You may want to look into flushing the system if the fluid is really bad.How do I bleed my power steering pump on my 98 Ford Taurus?
guys are right, microbubbles! I like micro bubbles on new years!

they will bubble up to the top , park in warm garage, cold will have thicker fluid and trap suspended bubbles.

Turn the radio up until then.

How do you change the lower seal on a power steering gear box?

I'm trying to figure out how to change the seal that goes around the lower shaft of the power steering gear box. The shaft comes out of the bottom of the box and connects to the pitman arm with a big bolt to hold the pitman arm to the shaft. The truck is a 1979 F150 and it is leaking fluid out of the bottom of the box right around the shaft. I was told by the parts store that there is a seal that goes around that shaft inside the box and I was hoping that someone might be able to give me some instructions on how to replace it. Thank you very much in advance!!How do you change the lower seal on a power steering gear box?
    Jack up the front end so that the wheels are off the ground, and/or enough room to maneuver underneath. Remove the nut from the Pitman Arm, make sure your wheels are pointed straight forward. Match-mark the arm to the shaft (to be safe, see later install instructions) and then remove the arm itself. You will need a puller, like this;

    http://www.autozone.com/in_our_stores/lo

Autozone will loan you one with a deposit, or other stores either for free or a small fee.

Start your engine, and making note of the number of revolutions, turn your steering wheel all the way to one side or the other. The peak of the hydraulic pressure as you hit the stops will usually blow the seal out onto the ground. If it doesn't come out the first time, try it again a couple more times. Turn the engine off right away if it comes out.

If it doesn't come out that way, you may have to use a small slide hammer with a dent puller attachment. Screw a screw into the deepest ridge in the seal, Attach the slide hammer and slide the weight from the end with the screw to the other end fairly briskly. You may have to do this again on the opposite side of the seal, if it's really stuck.

To put it back in, assuming you don't have a seal driver, a short straight piece of of exhaust tubing, like an adapter of the right diameter makes a good driver. It should seat into the crease in the seal if possible to find the right size. Hit the other end of the tube with a small sledge turned sideways, so you hit both sides at the same time, until the lip is flush with the gearbox. Don't use any sealant. The seal has a coating already.

Now turn the steering wheel back to center (engine off), and look for a spot on the shaft where one of the splines is missing, and you should find a matching section in the Pitman Arm. Line those up, and press on partway, using the nut (and washer) to press it the rest of the way on. Torque to 170-230 ft. lbs. Fill PS reservoir, start truck, check fluid level again, and check for leaks. How do you change the lower seal on a power steering gear box?
Best to get a service manual like Chilton or Haynes from a parts store...it will have the procedure on how to replace the seal.

How Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?

I'm having a hard time making right turns. The power steering fluid is full. The dust boots on the lower ball joints on both sides is cracked. Should I attempt to replace the ball joints myself or just take it to the shop? What would be the average price for all four ball joints to be replaced? Thanks! How Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?
Raise the front end off the ground, place jack stands under the frame so the front suspension hangs free. Take a long pry bar or a wrecking bar if that's all you have. Move the lower 'A' frames up and down. Grab the tires and see if they move around or feel %26quot;loose%26quot;. If the ball joints are bad, you'll see them move. You can also work the steering back and forth and maybe see whats binding. Ball joints are not hard to change, they are not very expensive. How Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?
zzzzzzzzHow Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?
Above are good answers. Check first according to what said.

Ball joints are not too expensive and they not hard to replace, just work safe. I not sure of the tool name. I call it a %26quot;Tuning Fork%26quot; It just a simple tool you hammer between the ball and where it bolt in and it pop out easy (We hope). I would suggest you get a cheap repair manual for $15-20 at the auto-part store, many will rent/loan the tuning fork if you not want to buy.

Also, as mentioned some use a Rivet type mount and it may need drilled out, the new ball joints come with bolts to mount them. How Do I change the Ball Joints on a 1999 Chevy Tahoe?
If they are the original ones they are riveted to the control arm assembly. I usually grind the heads of the rivets off and punch the rest through. New ones come with bolts to bolt onto control arm.

  • How do you change the serpintine belt on a 1998 oldsmobile cutlass ?

My belt broke the other day, and I need to replace it. I've never replaced one myself, and I don't want to spend the extra money to go to a mechanic to get it done. A diagram would be helpful too. Also, when it broke, power steering fluid spewed out, and left me without the use of power steering. Is this normal when a belt breaks while the engine is running ?How do you change the serpintine belt on a 1998 oldsmobile cutlass ?
Under your hood there should be a diagram showing how the belt is routed around all of the pulleys. There will also be an arrow telling which way you'll need to twist the tensioner to remove and install the belt, it is a fairly simple process.

    Loosen Tensioner

    Remove belt

    install new belt

    Tighten tensioner

Be sure not to drive the car without the belt because you won't have power steering or the pump circulating water to cool the engine (resulting in overheating). The power steering fluid being spewed out is abnormal, you'll need to refill this because some cars use the pressurized steering fluid to assist the brake system. Your local auto parts store should also be more than happy to print out the diagram for how to install the belt.

retreat the spring of the belt tensioner by holding the center bolt of the belt tensioner pulley and make pressure against the spring of the belt tensioner

What do you think is up with the power steering?

before, the power steering kept slipping and making that screeching sound so we got the belt changed and it fixed it. but now...a few months after we changed the belt, the same problem is happening, but not nearly as much. keep in mind it happens way more often in cold weather. also when you hear the screeches, the headlights dim, which mean the alternator is slipping right? and if you turn the wheel all the way, sometimes the battery charge indicator light up.

what do you think is wrong? not enough power steering fluid? or does the belt need to be adjusted? what is it?

if it does need to be readjusted, how would i do that? do you know if it has a tensioner or if i'd have to adjust the position of the alternator to change the tension?

new belts will stretch so you probably need to tighten the belt. Most of the time you need to loosen the alternator Use a pry bar to pull it tight and re tighten the bolts. the alternator is on a slide mount so this can be done What do you think is up with the power steering?

    Steering problem

1996 Dodge Stratus 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

August of 2009 my power steering belt broke. I had bought a new one and after a few weeks driving with no power steering I and had it repaired the next time I had my oil change. No other problems occurred except for the typical mild tension and whining my car would experience turning even before the belt had broke. (Should I also mention that the whining never occurred while I drove w/o power steering?)

This past weekend, my car was idling in a drive thru (after running over a pretty deep pot hole) and I heard something pop from my engine, and then the sound of liquid pouring onto the concrete, the issue? My power steering has gone out, again.

I bought some power steering fluid after checking it and seeing it was pretty low. It didn't really help. Despite this, my car runs fine, all the gauges, temperature ect. read out good.

After all that I would just like to know what my options are regarding this car. With the information given, what could the diagnosis be? How much would you suspect this issue to cost, and or if its viable for a car savvy friend to repair, what steps would be given to carry out such a task?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated!1996 Dodge Stratus Power Steering: PLZ HELP!!?
you may have damaged the rack and pinion unit on it when you drove it without the belt being on it and that may be where the fluid is leaking from on it ,first thing you really need to find out is where the fluid is going to and go from the with it,without knowing where is leaking from there's no more i can tell you on it,good luck.

Approximately how much will it cost to replace the power steering pump in my 97 ford taurus?

Here's the situation. My husband and I don't know anything about cars and he hasn't put any power steering fluid in his car for a while and it started getting difficult to turn. So I put some fluid in there and there was no change. The next day I put more in the resevoir and then let the car run for a while and then drove it. When i looked where the car was parked there was a small puddle of power steering fluid on the ground, but i didn't spill any. So i assumed their was a leak. I got power steering fluid with leak protection. Anyway I drove it again today after putting more fluid in and it is leaking in a different place, still leaking power steering fluid. So my question is what is the usual cost for the replacement of the pump (if that is the problem) because i don't want to get ripped off because i'm naive. Also is that what you guys think is wrong, or just a like a broken seal, or leaking hose or something? Thank you.Approximately how much will it cost to replace the power steering pump in my 97 ford taurus?
ill bet it isnt the pump. i dont recall ever seeing a ford pump go bad and leak fluid. its usually the rack and pinion cylinder, and there around 500.00 to replace, material and labor. i'd check for a used one in yellow pages, auto parts, used- buy that one, then call service places for a price on labor. most here in colorado (dealers) all charge over 100.00 per hour labor, and that job is prolly 1 1/2 to 2 hours labor.....hope its just a hose ..good luck.Approximately how much will it cost to replace the power steering pump in my 97 ford taurus?
Could be just a hose because they can crack after a while. It shouldn't cost a lot to fix it. • What causes whining sound when steering wheel is turned?

I have a 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII with 156K miles. I took it to the Dealer this morning to get an oil change and I was going to have the power steering fluid changed as well because it has problems during the cold weather. The power steering won't work until it warms up. However I decided to get a diagnostic run on it to determine why it makes a loud whining noise when I turn the steering wheel. The lady that worked at the service center said that it should not sound that loud. I am still waiting to hear from them as to what may be wrong and how much it may cost. I would like to know what the yahoo pros have to say about it so I can be well informed.

Check your power steering fluid. If you've never done that, you've probably already caused some damage to the power steering rack.

If you have checked it, ensure there is enough in the reservoir (look for the markings on the container itself). If there isn't enough, buy some high-mileage fluid and add until you have enough. The additive might be something to try.

When I flush a power steering system, I remove the return line to the pump, put the hose into a bucket, then plug the end on the pump. I then have a funnel in the pump and have someone start the vehicle while I quickly dump about 5 quarts of fluid through the system to flush it.

How to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?

    hi,

i have a 1999 pontiac grand am gt with 72,000 miles on it, i purchased the vehicle a couple monthes ago with about 64,000 miles on it, since then i have done spark plugs, whires, flushed the coolant system out twice to get rid of all the dex-cool, (eats engine parts) flushed the power steering fluid, brake fluid, also have done the brake pads, fuel injector cleaing, and change the oil every 1,500 miles, as you can see i take very good care of my car, the engine has alot of power, and i am very happy with my vehicle BUT.! one thing has always bothered me, THE TRANSMiSSiON FLUiD. i'VE always wanted to change it but there is no dip stick, and it is extremely hard to check the fluid, i've heard that there is a screw on the right side of the tranny at the top %26amp; you are supposed to be able to check the fluid that way, but it is still very hard. QUESTiON iS..should i change the fluid %26amp; filter myself.?? and how do i kno how much will fill it up.? or should i just leave ot alone.?How to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?
To change the fluid you need to go to a garage to have it done. They must hook the transmissions line that run to and from the cooler to a machine that swaps the fluid out. I don't know if GM does this but Ford does, You need to check but when you don't see a dipstick it usually mean they have lifetime fluid in them, which mean it never gets changed. If your anything like I am ,and it sounds like you are by the description of your car maintenance, I wouldn't trust that it's really lifetime and just have them change it.How to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?
no, no, no. there is no such thing as a lifetime fluid in transmissions, unless you want that lifetime to be a short one! change every 30-60k miles max! there's no dipstick, but search the internet there's a complicated way to check the level, and be sure to thank GM when you try to check it

I would try to check the fluid myself, and if you are sucessful (and feel positive you know the level it needs to be at) Then go ahead and take the pan bolts out %26amp; drop the pan, change the filter, and put fresh in.... I would rather do this than taking to a shop for flush %26amp; refill as sometimes doing that dislodges crud in the tranny which can block the fluid flowing and burn it up...so I usually do several changes the manual way to replace the majority of the fliud... If you can't figure out the fliud level you will need to take it in... hey, in grand am's a trans axel comes stock so in turn it is not possible to check the fluid because it is not a true transmission so to say. Only way to tell if something is wrong with your trans axel is if it is leaking fluid other than that it should be no big concernHow to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?
Have the filter and fluid flushed at a professional garage. To check the fluid, the vehicle must be level and running. Remove the screw on the R/S of the case near the R/S inner tripod joint. The fluid should drip out while running. Since it is impossible to get beneath the vehicle while it is in the ground, the best bet is letting a professional handle it.How to Change The transmission fluid in a 1999 Pontiac Grand am gt 3.4 liter v6?

how is the belt? did it break or is it slipping? this is a messy job but you could take the pressure hose off, make sure it,s full, start the truck and see if the pump is pumping fluid. if it,s pumping then it,s not the pump. it could be the rack.

Why is my power steering fluid all over the garage floor?

Okay... I had my Acura TL in for routine maintenance about 14 months back and during that time the dealer supposedly addressed a recall involving a potentially faulty power steering hose. I have papers stating that this work was completed and parts replaced but fourteen months later I suffer a catastrophic power steering hose failure. Hydraulic fluid is puddled on my garage floor and my TL is down. I really don't trust the local dealership at all but they are the only game in town. I really don't believe that they changed the hose and now I'm in a position where I have to prove they didn't. Let's say that they did what they were supposed to do. Is it unusual to have a failure of the line to happen in such a short time? Do I have any recourse against the dealership? I know that sometimes things just happen, but I don't think that this is just the luck of the draw. I need to know how, if possible, can I determine if the hose was actually replaced when they said it was.Why is my power steering fluid all over the garage floor?
When they changed your hose did they give you the old one? Did they even let you see it?Why is my power steering fluid all over the garage floor?
Before you condemn the dealer, make sure the hose they replaced is the source of your leak. If it is, call the service manager and explain your situation to him/her calmly! Don't get a attitude! It won't get you anywhere! Yes, new parts do fail. It happens. There are 2 hoses. 1 high pressure and 1 return line. One could have been replaced and the other one could have failed. Could be a clamp on the return line that failed or isn't tight. Like I said, confirm the source of the leak and go from there. Good Luck!

I recommend removing the fluid from the reservoir if you can, then disconnect the return line and put it into another container while plugging the return port on the reservoir. This will take all of the fluid from the system and return it to the jug and keep it from cycling back into your system. Then keep the reservoir topped off with the fluid you want to put into the system. Start the car and turn the steering wheel all of the way to one side, but not enough to make it squeal. Hold the wheel this way with a bungee. It's best to have someone help with this because the reservoir CANNOT RUN DRY! It will destroy the pump. Keep the car running and topping off the reservoir with new fluid until the fluid that runs out of the return line into the disposal jug is clean and has no air in it. After this, turn the car off, connect the return line back onto the power steering reservoir and turn the steering wheel to the opposite side. Let the car sit this way for about 5 to 10 minutes. Start it up, move the wheel from lock to lock and then bungee it on the other side, turn the car off and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes again. This will open up the valves in the rack and allow any air to float up and out of the system. You may have to do this several times, but it will bleed it and then you will have replaced the fluid in the system as well as flushed it. Hope this helps. I have done it many times.

I'm a service adviser at a dealership and I have a chemistry degree believe it or not. If they did a power flush w/an adittive (probably), you should have paid anywhere from 120.00 to 140.00. The additive is to stabalize the fluid so copper ions are not eating up the seals and other polymer/plastic parts. The Steering rack and pump are a large system and need more fluid and a special machine for flushing that the rest of these jokers don't understand. It really extends the life of the rack and pinion which can be really expensive to replace.

It's especially important when a repair has been made because an otherwise closed system has been compromised.

Brake system flushes are just as beneficial.I think I just got ripped off... how much should it cost to refill/replace power steering fluid in a 96 volvo?

    A Power Steering Fluid Question?

The person who does my oil change should let me know that my power sterring fluid is low right?Well I got an oil change on Jan 10th, 2006, but the person did not indicate to me that it was low.Anyways yesterday I went to exit the spirally parking garage with my car and found it was hard to turn the wheel. So I checked the little bottle under the hood that said power steering fluid and it looked quite empty to me.Also, I had recently changed a lightbulb for one of my headlights and I remember having to lift the power steering reservoir in order to get access to the lightbulb.I don't know if me lifting the reservoir out of its location maybe made a leak happen.I guess what i'm asking is could this be a leak because i moved the reservoir from its location so i could gain access to change my headlight blub, or is it really time to top up the power steering fluid?and if the latter, why didn't the person who did my oil change on Jan 10, 2006 tell me to do so?How much will this cost to top up?A Power Steering Fluid Question?
if you had the cap on the resevoir and moved it location it shouldn't of changed a thing at all, what i mean is if the resevoir was full it should still be fulled. Now here is what i would do if i were you, i would go to a car part store and get some power steering fluid and pour it into the resevoir up to the full line. then i would keep my eyes on it to see if it would go down any.

here is what i suggest after putting the power steering fluid is drive the car as normal and every time you fill up at the gas station check the power steering fluid, if it goes low rapidly then you know that their is a leak somewhere but if it still somewhat full then it should be good and no problems at all.

you can identify a power steering problem when you have to struggle with the steering wheel just to get your car to turn. if you have any more issues feel free to contact me at hotcivic80@yahoo.com and let me know the problem in the email and i will reply.

Just get a bottle of fluid ($2) and fill it up to the requisite level. Check it again in a couple of days. if you have a leak, you'll know. This system is under pressure, so when there's a leak, it's usually a good one. Often times you'll smell it as it drips onto hot engine parts as well.

Chances are you were just low on fluid. Don't trust the flunkies at the oil change places. Full service is an almost outdated term. I barely trust them to change my oil. Learn to check everything else yourself, and your peace of mind will only benefit.A Power Steering Fluid Question?
First of all, you shouldnt rely on others to check fluid levels. Now that being said, if the level is low, go to a parts store (autozone, napa, etc) and BUY SOME POWER STEERING FLUID. A bottle of power steering fluid should be less than 5 bucks depending on where you are from.A Power Steering Fluid Question?
you got an oil change in Jan. that was 3 months ago.

I have seen this alot unfournatly....somone touches your car and from that point on ...till somone else touches it anythin that could possibly go wrong is blamed on him.

it is possible to check a fluid level and the next day develop a slow leak a weep or a seep out of a power stearing line. what im saying is the most responsible person here is you..or should be. but i will tell you a lil trick. refill the reservoir and put a few drops of brake fluid in with it ...it makes the seals swell a little and will stop some leaks depending on location.

99 Taurus - Changed power steering pump. Growling with not much assist.?

I just bought this car power steering was wonky and leaking so I figured the pump had likely got dry a few times and screwed the pump.

By wonky I mean that the steering seemed to have good assist at times and not good at others. It was kind of come and go.

I put a new pump on and now I am getting very little power assist most of the time. When I am parked in my alley and I turn the wheels back and forth it seems to almost fully assist but the pump is growling most of the way.Fluid level is good. Not sure how long it may take to bleed the system. I turned the wheel fully side to side several times on 3 different occasions. I also took it for a drive and it seemed there was some assist but may have only seemed that way cause the car was moving. Now that I read this it is pretty much the same as before.

I am now assuming it is the steering gear. Not to excited about changing that. Looks like hell. Possibly a clogged line or power steering fluid filter?

Any help, suggestions are greatly appreciated,

There is air trapped in the system. you have to create a vacuum in the reservoir using a tool that looks like the cap except it has a fitting for a vacuum pump to connect to. check auto zone for this tool.99 Taurus - Changed power steering pump. Growling with not much assist.?
yea maybe a line or filter.. check with your local auto parts store to find out if you have a filter but then again you may have just replaced it with another bad pump... whether new or used a pump can be bad... i would try replacing the pump again first.. seeing as how u should have a warranty on it anyway.. that would save you some cash if this is the problem.... if this still does not resolve the issue and you checked the lines and filters (if applicable) then try the steering gear.. but it doesn't sound like it would be the issue... also flush all the lines with clean fluid.. but man it really just sounds like another bad pump.. sorry... good luck man!

Does either the power steering or break fluid need to be changed?

If so how often and how to do it?Does either the power steering or break fluid need to be changed?
Well, brake fluid doesn't wear out, but it gets very hot by the brakes and the fluid does absorb water. Usually, if you bleed them well after a brake change, that is plenty.

I've never actually changed the fluid completely out, but I attended a BMW brake clinic and they had a machine to do it.

The guy did bring up something about power steering fluid. Most people don't change it, but it is under a lot of pressure and gets quite warm as well. I change mine every 50k miles.

If you just get as much out as you can with a rubber bulb type turkey baster, then refill with the correct fluid, you'll get enough new fluid in to do the job. Does either the power steering or break fluid need to be changed?
Toyota may say it does in the service manual but rarely does anyone do this.Does either the power steering or break fluid need to be changed?
not unless you have a problem and some leaks out-they are hydraulic systems so the fluid is fully contained and does not get used up. Does either the power steering or break fluid need to be changed?
No. Unless you get moisture or dirt in it, just keep it at proper levels.

And break is spelled brake.Does either the power steering or break fluid need to be changed?
YES, YOU SHOULD CHANGE THE BRAKE FLUID EVERY 2 YEARS DUE TO FLUID CONTAMINATION AND THERMAL BREAKDOWN, THE BOILING POINT GETS LOWER AND YOUR BRAKES COULD OVERHEAT GOING DOWN A STEEP HILL OR HEAVY STOPPING, SUCK IT OUT THE RESERVOIR AND REFILL WITH NEW FLUID, THEN BLEED ALL 4 BRAKES MAKING SURE TO KEEP THE RESERVOIR FULL. AS FAR AS THE POWER STEERING FLUID YES YOU SHOULD TO KEEP FROM ABNORMAL WEAR TO THE RACK AND PINION STEERING RACK DUE TO FLUID VISCOSITY BREAKDOWN. THIS IS FROM A MECHANIC VIEWPOINT. HOPE THAT HELPS.
